BHL supplements its collection by passively harvesting, or "ingesting", open access content from the corpus of digitized books available through the Internet Archive in order to acquire materials otherwise unavailable within the consortium of BHL institutions. Thus selected materials scanned by the University of California Libraries and the Wellcome Library, for example, can be found in the BHL collection. These materials are identified with the description, "(archive.org)" as part of the Holding Institution data field.

Requirements

All non-BHL partner content must conform to the following criteria in order to be harvested into the BHL collection.

  1. Item must be present as part of the Internet Archive corpus of "texts" https://archive.org/details/texts
  2. Item must be open access, meaning that it is freely available for access and download; cannot be a part of the Books to Borrow collection for example
  3. Item must have a MARCXML associated with it – this is how BHL source's metadata for the item
  4. Metadata contained within the MARCXML subject heading and call number fields is used to match against the BHL criteria.
  5. Items matching the criteria are harvested into the BHL collection with the exception of any Google or HathiTrust materials that may be present in the IA corpus.
  6. Items in the "biodiversity" collection in IA are automatically harvested to BHL regardless of the criteria.
  7. Only BHL partners are permitted to submit items to the "biodiversity" collection in IA.
