Figshare is a repository not a regular website.

Once you hit PUBLISH and save YOU CAN NOT PERMANENTLY DELETE.
Any files associated with the published dataset will still be available - even if you remove them - because the dataset is versioned. The removed files will still appear under an older version.

Datasets and their associated metadata can only be permanently removed by an administrator - contact Thompson, Keri if you need a dataset permanently deleted.

Edit a published item

(warning) changes to some of the metadata fields or to any file(s) in the dataset will trigger a new version (see below).

To edit a public item go to the My data tab
hover over the item you want to edit
click on the edit pen that appears on the far right next to the size.
The metadata editing form will then come up and you can edit any of the fields, add more categories, etc.

To edit an unpublished item simply click on its title.

Adding/replacing/deleting/restoring a file

To replace a file, you will need to first delete the file, and then upload a new one.

To add a file, simply drag a new file into the area that says drag more file(s) on the page or click the browse link under Tips

(warning) deleting the file does not permanently delete it!! The file will always be available as a version (see below)

  1. At the top of the editing window near the existing files, click on the link to Manage files.
  2. In the file management window, check the box next to the file you want to delete and click the link to Delete Selected File(s)

  3. Drag and drop the replacement file into the lower half of the editing window.

  4. When done deleting and uploading new files click the green Done editing button in the lower right

When files or metadata are deleted from a published item, it will simply trigger a new version. The deleted files or metadata will still be publicly available by viewing the earlier version.

If you need to restore a file that has been accidentally deleted, you can do that from the file management window as well.
(warning) If all files have been deleted, you won't see a link to Manage - instead, there will be a link to view deleted files below the Tips section.

Click on the link and in the file manager window, click the restore icon.

(warning) FILES IN UNPUBLISHED ITEMS MAY BE RESTORED UP TO 30 DAYS AFTER DELETION

Bulk edit multiple items

Bulk editing is especially handy when you want to apply a keyword to multiple items (which won't trigger a new version!) or if you want to apply or change a license.

  1. In My Data check the box next to the items that you wish to edit and then from the Actions drop-down menu, select Edit in Batch

  2. The next screen that comes up will list the fields that you can edit on the left. Select the field you wish to bulk edit, and check the radio button next to Prepend, Append, Replace, or Delete as needed. When done, hit Save all changes in the lower right.

Delete an unpublished item (metadata and files)

(error) only unpublished items may be completely deleted (both metadata and files)

Edit your item as above - you should see a button near the bottom left of the metadata editing form to Delete item

Versioning

see Figshare Knowledgebase for more about versioning.

Versions are triggered by:

  • Title edits/changes
  • Add/edit/remove an Author
  • Add/Remove files
  • Change files from private to shared
  • Add files to metadata only records
  • Replace the link in a link-only item
  • automatic syncing of a Github repo when there is a new release
  • manual syncing of a Github repo to update the files

Each version has their own DOI and can be cited independently.
The version DOI is created from the base DOI with the addition of a v<n> suffix, where n is the version number.
All the (versioning) rules will apply if the items are going through a curation process. The only difference is that new versions or updates to existing versions are created only when the request is approved.

Each version may be cited separately, and will include the metadata that was present at the time the version was published, e.g., if an author was added, the original version won't contain that author name. If a file is "deleted" it will always be available in the version when it was published.
